I — The Foundry

A bell is tuned six times. Then never again.

Every voice you hear on this site is cast, not recorded. We synthesize each bell live from its five partials — hum, prime, tierce, quint, nominal — the same five tones a founder tunes at the lathe, shaving bronze from the inside of the bell until each one sits true. Strike the bell above and listen for the slow beat inside the decay: no bell is perfectly round, and the warble is the proof.

Ten generations have poured bronze under this roof. What follows is how a bell is made — the way it has been made since 1721.

II — The Casting

I

The mould

A bell begins as its own absence: a cavity of loam and clay swept true by a strickle turned about the axis. The space between core and cope is the bell — every curve of the voice is decided before any metal exists.

The metal

Bell bronze is seventy-eight parts copper, twenty-two of tin. At 1,100 °C the furnace holds a liquid that will remember, for centuries, the shape of one afternoon.

The pour

The foundry falls silent — a pour cannot pause. Cast mouth-down, the bronze enters at the crown and takes the sound bow first, rising through the mould in one unbroken breath.

IV

The cooling

Three days in the pit. Bronze shrinks as it learns its shape, and the founder waits — hurry now is a crack later.

V

The break

The mould is broken; it only ever makes one bell. What comes out is mute bronze. The voice still has to be found at the tuning lathe.

III — The Tuning

The voice is found by taking away.

Out of the broken mould comes mute bronze, cast thick on purpose — a founder leaves metal to spare, because tuning only ever goes one way. The bell turns on a vertical lathe and the cut is always inside: shave near the sound bow and the nominal falls; the waist carries the hum and the quint; the shoulder holds the prime. Six tunings — once for each of the five partials, and once for the strike note the ear invents — then never again.

IV — The Ledger

What the furnace made, the ledger keeps.

Nine bells stand in the register — from the founding bell of 1721 to the tercentenary bourdon hanging above. Every entry is a voice, and every voice still answers.
